A local group has collected more than 1,000 books to be donated to children during an event next month at the San Ysidro Health Clinic.

National City leaders Monday unveiled a community mural at San Ysidro Health-South Bay Health Center commemorating the legacy and work of civil rights leaders of Dolores Huerta, Cesar Chavez, Martin Luther King Jr., and Larry Itliong.

San Diego was awarded a $3.65 million California Violence Intervention and Prevention grant for the Peacemaker Project, a program that aims to interrupt cycles of violence among youth, it was announced Tuesday.

‘Project Peacemaker’ will help community groups mobilize after violence occurs to help prevent retaliatory incidents.

The city of National City, in partnership with Community HousingWorks and San Ysidro Health broke ground Aug. 16 on a residential development which will include affordable housing, a senior center, and a health center with inclusive care for elderly residents.
