RSV is a common respiratory virus that often causes cold-like symptoms. However, it can lead to serious illness in infants, especially during their first year of life.
Two Ways to Protect Your Baby
If You Are 32–36 Weeks Pregnant
Ask your San Ysidro Health provider about the maternal RSV vaccine. When given during pregnancy, the vaccine helps you pass protection to your baby before birth. In most of the United States, the vaccine is recommended between September and January.
For Babies Younger Than 8 Months
Ask your child’s provider about an RSV immunization. This preventive antibody can provide immediate protection that lasts for at least five months. Most babies need protection through either maternal vaccination or an infant RSV immunization, but not both. Your provider can help determine which option is right for your baby.
Additional Ways to Help Your Baby Stay Healthy
- Wash your hands often.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid crowded indoor spaces when possible.
- Keep your baby’s regular pediatric appointments.
